Grand Cayman is known as a higher-end destination with luxury hotels and restaurants. We’ve visited Cayman tons of times despite not having a gigantic budget for vacations, so we’ve learned a few tips to plan a family vacation to Grand Cayman on a budget -- saving both in planning your trip and once you arrive!

Hotel vs. condo

Most of the resorts in Grand Cayman are incredible with great service and amenities, but many also come with a very high price point. We prefer to trade off some of the amenities that a hotel offers for the extra space of a condo. Most condos are more affordable than the hotels, but there are some ultra luxury condos too! We stay at Harbour Heights, which we absolutely love. It’s on a great part of Seven Mile Beach, has a pool and is in a convenient location to tons of stuff along Seven Mile Beach.

Palm trees and vibrant purple flowers by a green lawn lead to a turquoise sea under a partly cloudy sky, creating a serene, tropical scene.

When to travel

As with most of the Caribbean, the high-season for Grand Cayman is during the winter, and the price of hotels reflect it. We typically visit in early- mid-April, as rates tend to decrease after April 15, and weather in the northern US can still be pretty miserable. The lower rates stay in place until fall, but keep in mind summer is hurricane season, so be prepared for your travel to possibly be disrupted due to weather.

Where to stay

Seven Mile Beach is the most expensive area to stay in because it is home to lots of restaurants, attractions and shopping. We prefer to stay on Seven Mile Beach for these reasons; however, there are a few other areas on the island that you may want to consider if you’re okay staying in a quieter spot.

  • North Side: This is home to Rum Point, which has a great bar/restaurant with a beach bbq on Tuesday nights. There are a ton of great condo rental options on this part of the island.
